 Okay, babe. I bought you a nice gift, this set of silver CZ earrings and pendant. That’s three pieces of stunning, glittery jewelry to make up for the three cardinal man-sins: leaving the toilet seat up, forgetting our anniversary, and not noticing when you get your hair done.
I understand that these are things that every couple has to deal with. And I understand there is no forgiveness for men who commit these cardinal sins. There are no excuses. Not even the excuse that, hey, if I have to put the toilet seat up every time I use it, why can’t you put the toilet seat down every time YOU use it? Equal partnership, right? Wrong. That excuse, as we both know, makes absolutely no sense, is extremely sexist, and will result in my immediate expulsion from the bedroom to the couch.
It is not acceptable to make the excuse that it’s easy to forget our anniversary when I’m also expected to remember the anniversary of our first date, the anniversary of the first time we met, the anniversary of our first kiss, the anniversary of our second kiss, the anniversary of that one time you made salmon for dinner and it was delicious, and all the other anniversaries you make me celebrate. That’s no excuse either, since I know that every one of our precious memories together are worth celebrating every year, and failing to do so is a clear indication that I don’t love you anymore and am likely cheating on you. Forgetting anniversaries, therefore, is almost unforgivable.
It is also not acceptable to make the excuse that when you get your hair done by taking off an 1/8 of an inch and making it a quarter fraction of a shade lighter, it’s hard to notice. I see you every day, but when I am away, I am expected to think of you every moment of the day, just like you think of me every moment of the day, so of course I should notice when you make even the smallest change to your appearance. That, I admit, is my fault entirely, and thus completely void of excuse.
So as an apology to you, my true love, I give you this gorgeous jewelry set, so you’ll know how much I love you. It’s one of the five love languages from that one book you made me read awhile back that I really did finish even though you still don’t believe me, so I know you’ll appreciate it.
